Big questions, answered as far as the evidence goes.

Edge of the Known makes cinematic explainers about the mind, the universe, technology, history and us. Real research, made easy to understand, and left honestly open where the answer is open. You leave having learned something, and asking a better question.

How we use AI

Researched, written and directed by Carl. Animated in code and narrated with AI tools. Every claim is sourced.

In practice, Claude (Anthropic’s AI model) does much of the research legwork, checks the script line by line against its sources, and writes the animation code. The narrator’s voice is generated with Google’s Gemini text-to-speech. Carl picks every topic, directs every film and signs off on every script.

AI tools make a channel this size possible. The sources are what make it trustworthy, so every one of them is on this site.

How a film is made

  1. A question

It starts with a question too big for one answer, picked from an idea bank and from what people are actually asking.

  2. Research

Research passes gather primary sources. Every fact gets an ID, a link and a confidence rating: high, medium or low.

  3. Script and fact-check

An editing pass checks every line of the script against its source. Weak claims are softened or cut before anything is animated.

  4. Narration

The narrator is an AI voice. Every take is transcribed and compared with the script, word for word.

  5. Animation, in code

Every scene is built as code (SVG, canvas and HTML) on the night-blue lattice. No stock footage, no AI-generated video.

  6. A blind critique

A fresh reviewer who hasn’t seen the script scores the cut. The weakest scenes get rebuilt.

  7. Mix and premiere

Music under the voice, chapters, captions, and a sources page like the ones on this site.

Why “Edge of the Known”

Every film walks up to the line where science stops being sure, and stops there honestly. That line moves. Each answer shows you the next range of questions.

Dèyè mòn gen mòn.

A Haitian Kreyòl proverb: beyond the mountains, more mountains.
